Menstrual cycles have long been a topic of misconceptions and myths and in today’s society there is no excuse for ignorance.  Nurses, general practitioners and gynecologists alike are willing and able to explain anything you do not understand as well as give you needed information.  All period blood has a smell but you have to know your body and be able to judge the smells for yourself.  A good indicator that you may need to see your doctor is when your period blood starts to have an excessive "fishy” or "dead” smell when you know you are otherwise clean.   These could be indicators of infection, sexually transmitted disease, hemorrhaging, and other serious issues.  It is always a good idea to check with and your gynecologist if you have any lasting odor that is strong or unusual.

Many years ago, without the knowledge that is readily available today, women ignored symptoms such as these and many paid with their lives.  Ignoring infections or other issues can lead to the inability to have children in several different ways.  Scarring on the fallopian tubes can be caused by certain things while others can cause the removal of the uterus and other reproductive organs in order to save the life of the woman.

Not only is a foul smell to your menstrual blood unsanitary, it is also cause for the concern of your genital health.  Paying attention to your body and taking care of your "goodies” and overall health at all ages will be appreciated when you are older.  Keep your yearly checkup appointments, your reproductive health, if ignored can also lead to other changes in your life.  Consider the mother of 6 who was diagnosed with cervical cancer well after it had metastasized into her intestines, almost costing her the life she so happily built.  If only she had gone to the doctor more often and stopped ignoring the pains she had been having for two years.  Protect your reproductive health; it’s important at all ages.

Wow those were the three worst answers ever.  Blood can have a smell to it, but a very strong smell can mean you aren't keeping the area clean enough.  A sweet smell can possibly indicate diabetes.
